The AI-asset question around Graveyard Keeper 2

When the sequel was announced in April 2026, some players read the key art as generative AI and said so. A co-founder replied directly. This page records what was claimed, what was said in response, and what nobody has established — without deciding the question for you.

How to read this page

This page states reported facts and attributes them. It does not conclude whether Graveyard Keeper 2 uses AI-generated assets, because no source settles that: the claims are visual impressions, the denial is from the studio, and no independent audit exists. Where a claim is one person’s reading of an image, it is presented as that. Where a statement is on the record, it is quoted in full.

Reported record

What happened, in order

Dates and quotes as reported by PC Gamer and Console & PC Gaming, both published April 11, 2026, and as linked from those reports.

March 25, 2025 — A co-founder posts about AI image tools
Primary post Lazy Bear co-founder and CTO Slava Cherkasov posts on X that "Image creation by ChatGPT is fun", with an attached image. In February 2025 he had also posted about using an AI upscaling and structure-reference tool to pixelate his own art, saying that with a little post-production and pixelisation it "does a great job". Both posts predate the sequel’s announcement by more than a year.
March 17, 2026 — A post about AI criticism
Primary post Cherkasov posts on X, a day after DLSS 5 was unveiled: "Hordes of AI haters hate full lips and makeup and everything AI. The other camp is trying to prove them wrong with reasoning. Dozens of developers trying to jump on a hype train by making DLSS memes that have no sense."
April 2026 — Graveyard Keeper 2 is announced
Announcement The sequel is revealed at the Triple-i Initiative livestream, alongside a promotion giving the original game away free on Steam for a few days. The reveal draws a large wishlist response and a critical thread about the key art.
April 11, 2026 — Players allege the key art is AI-generated
Allegation On r/GraveyardKeeper, user RottenRailing writes that "The promo art looks very much like generative AI, and is an immediate turn-off," adding that the original art "was charming, and certainly more unique". A second thread from user PotatoChaaaaps raises what they call the "elephant in the room" — that the studio’s co-founder posts frequently about AI on X.
April 11, 2026 — A co-founder responds in the thread
Denial Cherkasov replies publicly: "You may not believe me, but we’re not using the AI in Graveyard Keeper 2. Yes, I’m experimenting with every AI model I can find. This is what every tech guy should do now." He adds that his experiments are separate projects unrelated to the game, and that he does not work on the game’s art, sound or music.
April 11, 2026 — The press reports it
Press report PC Gamer publishes a report by Justin Wagner the same day, and Console & PC Gaming publishes one by Angel Kicevski, both carrying the allegation and the reply. PC Gamer notes that the Reddit account making the denial is not identified as Cherkasov in the thread itself, but has been referred to by a username the studio has used for him in its own posts.
September 2026 — Still unresolved
Current state No further allegation, retraction, statement or third-party analysis has been published that this site could find. Valve’s AI-content disclosure does not appear on the game’s Steam listing, and neither the official site nor any storefront carries a statement about how the art was made.

How players responded

Reaction in the threads was split and stayed split. Some said the explanation resolved it; one commenter said the explanation was welcome but that they would still wait for the finished game before deciding to support it; another argued that a project lead exploring AI at all was itself the concern. That range is representative of the discussion rather than a verdict on it.

On the record

The statements themselves

Reproduced so you can read them rather than a summary of them. The first is the studio-side statement; the rest are the posts that the allegations pointed to.

You may not believe me, but we’re not using the AI in Graveyard Keeper 2. Yes, I’m experimenting with every AI model I can find. This is what every tech guy should do now.
Slava Cherkasov, Lazy Bear co-founder and CTOReddit reply to the allegation thread, April 11, 2026
I’m constantly creating some small experimental projects that are not shared with the audience and have nothing to do with Graveyard Keeper. I’m not doing the art—we have about 8 artists for that. I’m not doing sound or music either. I’m just a tech guy that is experimenting with the tech to understand what it can do.
Slava CherkasovSame reply, on the extent of his own work
Hordes of AI haters hate full lips and makeup and everything AI. The other camp is trying to prove them wrong with reasoning.
Slava CherkasovX, March 17, 2026 Not about the game
Image creation by ChatGPT is fun.
Slava CherkasovX, March 25, 2025 Not about the game
Tried a structure reference to pixelate my art. With a little bit post-production/pixelization, I’d say it does a great job.
Slava CherkasovX, February 28, 2025, discussing a structure-reference tool Not about the game

The three posts marked as contested are the ones the allegations cite. They are not statements about Graveyard Keeper, and none of them says that game assets were generated. They are quoted here because they are the stated basis for the accusation rather than because they support it.

The two positions, stated fairly

Both sides of this are arguments rather than findings, and neither has been independently tested.

The case against

The reveal artwork reads to some players as having the visual hallmarks they associate with generative output, and the studio’s co-founder has a public history of interest in and praise for AI image tools, which players found relevant context rather than incidental. The specific prompt was the gap between that public enthusiasm and a flat denial.

The case in reply

The denial is direct and specific. Cherkasov separates his personal experimentation from production work, states he is not responsible for art, sound or music on the project, and puts the art team at around eight people. Other players in the same threads said the art and trailer did not read as AI to them.

What neither side has produced

No party has published a technical analysis of the assets. No storefront disclosure says AI was used, and — equally — no storefront disclosure says it was not. The question was argued over impressions and credentials, and it has not been settled by evidence either way.

What to look at yourself

If this matters to your purchase, there are a few concrete things you can check rather than relying on anyone’s summary — including this one.

  • The Steam listing’s content-disclosure area. Valve requires disclosure of AI-generated content, and no such block appears on this game’s store page as of September 16, 2026.
  • The announcement trailer and the release-date trailer, both official, alongside the game’s own screenshots on the store listing. Judge the assets rather than the argument about them.
  • The credited art team, if credits are published after launch, and whether the shipped game’s assets match the pre-release key art in style.
  • The developer’s own posts, rather than quotes of them, if you want the unedited context of the statements above.

This page will be rebuilt if a disclosure appears, if the studio issues a further statement, or if any outlet publishes an analysis. The checked-date stamp at the top of the page is what tells you how current it is.

Where these facts come from

Graveyard Keeper 2 is not out yet, so nothing here is reproduced from a finished-game wiki. Each entry below is labelled by what it is: a developer or publisher source, a platform store listing, a press report, a video, or a fan-maintained page. Fan pages are used for terminology only, never for numbers.

  • Press report PC Gamer — Graveyard Keeper devs respond as players make AI accusationsBy Justin Wagner, published 2026-04-11. Carries the player allegation, the co-founder’s denial verbatim, and the X posts the allegation pointed to. It also flags that the Reddit account posting the denial is not identified as Cherkasov in the thread itself, but matches a username Lazy Bear has used for him in its own posts.
  • Press report Console & PC Gaming — Graveyard Keeper 2 art row puts AI fears back in the spotlightBy Angel Kicevski, published 2026-04-11. Independent same-day report of the same exchange, with the Reddit usernames, the quoted X posts including full timestamps, and the split in player reaction. Its own game-data sidebar still lists a December 31, 2026 release, which is an aggregator placeholder rather than a date any storefront publishes.
  • Store listing Steam appdetails API — app 4358690 (US region)Machine-readable copy of the store listing, read 2026-09-16. Source of the $24.99 list / $19.99 pre-order price, the exact category list, the 64-bit requirement wording, and the registered demo app id 5075680.
  • Store listing Graveyard Keeper 2 on Steam (app 4358690)The most detailed platform listing: 11 interface languages, single-player only, full controller support with DualShock and DualSense entries, Steam Cloud, Achievements, Family Sharing, and the Windows minimum and recommended specifications.
Questions

AI question FAQs

Does Graveyard Keeper 2 use AI-generated art?

Unresolved. In April 2026 some players said the reveal key art read as generative AI, and Lazy Bear co-founder Slava Cherkasov publicly denied it, saying the team was not using AI in the game. No independent analysis has been published, and this site does not conclude either way.

What exactly did the developer say?

Cherkasov replied in the Reddit thread: "You may not believe me, but we’re not using the AI in Graveyard Keeper 2. Yes, I’m experimenting with every AI model I can find. This is what every tech guy should do now." He added that he does not handle the game’s art, sound or music, and that the art team numbers about eight people.

Does the Steam page carry an AI disclosure?

No. Valve requires developers to disclose AI-generated content, and as of September 16, 2026 no such disclosure block appears on the Graveyard Keeper 2 store page, and the listing’s metadata carries no AI-disclosure field. That is the absence of a disclosure, which is not the same as a statement that no AI was used.

Why were players suspicious in the first place?

Two reasons, as reported. Some read the announcement key art as having visual hallmarks associated with generative AI, and a second thread pointed out that the studio’s co-founder posts about AI tools on X, including images made with them. The suspicion rested on an impression of the art plus that public history.

Has the allegation been resolved?

Not by evidence. A denial was issued and reported by two outlets on the same day, and player reaction was split. No technical analysis, retraction or further statement has been published since April 2026.

Will this page be updated?

Yes. If a storefront disclosure appears, if the studio issues another statement, or if an outlet publishes an analysis, this page gets rebuilt from those sources. The "facts checked" date at the top of every page on this site records when it was last verified.
